April To-Be-Read: Will They Live Up to the Hype?

There are a lot of popular reads in my stack this month

Last month, I read 14 books bringing my total for the year up to 36 books. I borrow a majority of the books from my local library. I don’t like buying books unless I know I’ll re-read them or I’m supporting a Canadian or Indigenous author or bookstore. (Sometimes, I’ll admit, the Kindle deals do convince me to break these rules or I *need* to read something the library doesn’t have, but I’m trying to resist.)

This month some of my choices are based on Book Riot’s 2021 Spring Review, while bookstagram inspired the rest. Here is my April to-be-read (TBR) shelf on Goodreads. You can also find frequent updates of my reading progress on Instagram, @kaitlynreadsalot. You do not need an account to view either Goodreads on Instagram.

From the spring review:

  • How Beautiful We Were by Imbolo Mbue
  • The Soul of a Woman by Isabel Allende
  • My Year Abroad by Chang-Rae Lee
  • The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (The Four Winds is the spring review book. However, they said anything by Kristin Hannah was good, and this is what was available.)

Also on my TBR list this month are:

  • Piranesi by Susanna Clark
  • Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Jones
  • Gutter Child by Jael Richardson
  • Indians on Vacation by Thomas King
  • A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas
  • A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas

Worth the Hype?

Except for the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, which I started in March, I chose all these books because they garnered social media and book blog attention. So, I’m asking the question: are they worth the hype? I expect these books to be unique, appealing to any reader, and of course, to linger with me. If the cover says the book will haunt me, then it better haunt me. And some of the featured reviews on this month’s covers have some big promises to fulfill.
