Another benefit of university, I find at least, is independent study. In high school, I had 4 75-minute periods plus a 50-minute lunch – then I went and worked 3–5 hours most nights. At 8 or 9 pm I didn’t want to do homework. I often felt like most periods were wasted time. I learnt more in 12 weeks of university than I did in 4 years of high school. Somehow I taught myself to learn on my own in university with some guidance from the professors, a skill the “spoon-feeding” style of high school deprived me of and that I’ve needed since day one of being in the workplace.
