An Eye-Opening University Course
Diversity, they say, open your mind
In third year I decided I was making baseless judgements. I had never taken a gender studies course or global development course, but it was stamped in my mind that these majors in one way or another were lesser than my major.
Gender studies, I’d determined, was no work, all complaining. Similarly, the only thing Devs students were good at in my mind was pointing out all the problems in world and advocating for change, not actually proposing solutions. Oh no, identifying and implementing solutions was my major’s responsibility. Fix all the problems and don’t hurt anybody’s feelings or disadvantage anyone while doing it – a piece of cake. Clap your hands the answer will magically appear. That’s the skill possessed by a political studies major.
To combat my prejudices I decided I’d take a course from each department in order to make an informed judgement.
At this point, taking a global development course was no feasible. There was a full year prerequisite that I did not have the room to take as a third year.
Genders it was…
One course fit in my schedule. Women and Work.
Sounded like it would tickle my political fancy and tie in nicely with my certificate program in Employment…
