The word summer is synonymous with vacation; hot weather, suntans, beach or cottage getaways also come to mind. Whether or not you‘re travelling somewhere this summer, these three books will take you places—one for each hot month of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere. So even if all you have planned is a staycation, you can treat yourself to a summer read.

1. Book Lovers by Emily Henry

Henry’s newest contemporary romance follows literary agent Nora Stephens on a trip to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina, with her little sister Libby. She continuously runs into Charlie Lastra, an editor from the city.

It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute. — Emily Henry

As someone from a small town, this book is number one on my list. Yes, you can vacation in small towns, and yes, low-key vacations are still fun and maybe more relaxing. Plus, it has a bookish theme; you can’t go wrong.

2. Sex and Vanity by Kevin Kwan

Set on the island of Capri, this book is all glitz and glam. Would you expect anything less from Kevin Kwan (author of Crazy Rich Asians)? The story follows Lucy Churchill, whose father’s family is WASP through and through, as she attends her cousin Charlotte’s wedding. On her first day there, she meets George Zao and spends the rest of her time desperately trying to avoid falling in love with him.

“Your mother is Chinese so it’s no surprise you’d be attracted to someone like him,” Charlotte teases. — Kevin Kwan

As the reader, you’ll feel like you’re also a guest at the wedding. The descriptions of Capri are beautiful, and you can’t help but feel like you know more about the island once you’ve finished this book. In parts, it’s laugh-out-loud funny and also cringeworthy. The second half of the book takes place years later in New York, and the drama that unfolds will keep you hooked.

3. The Glass Hotel by Emily St…
